The essence of overlanding

Overlanding is not about polluting or destroying anything.

It’s about freedom to be (and stay in) the most spectacular wild places on this planet. It’s about the ability to move easily, uncontrolled and undetected by the system, it’s about having a huge range, both in space and time, to be one with nature, and to be adequately protected from severe weather and wildlife. An overlander is an autonomous being, somebody who doesn’t need supernatural powers or the help of others to reach and roam the places he desires, and be in each one of them at the perfect moment in time.

Those who do not understand that, are simply missing the point.

Geography as an addiction

There’s a saying “If you don’t grow up until you’re 50, you don’t have to” 🙂 Being 53 and having a gray beard that makes me look even older, I often get funny looks from guys I meet in the remote corners of this planet, when I suddenly stumble on them, either in my Jeep or on foot. It’s probably not normal for a guy at the right age to be someone’s grandfather to roam around remote places for no reason other than to find out what’s there 😉 Continue reading “Geography as an addiction”

Time for freedom is running out

How many more years of freedom in the nature do we have? Some say no more than 5. People are constantly hurded into towns by the global regime, as into some concentration camps where they can be easily monitored. And nature lovers are like cancer patients, knowing that their days are numbered, and it’s just a question how much longer they’ll live. All activities that represent individual freedoms are being banned, such as wild camping, or lighting campfires. People will not be allowed to stay in places where the regime doesn’t have control over them anymore, and where they’re staying for free. Everything is being commercialized, you have to pay for the right to live. Travelling in cars through the wilderness is being banned with the excuse that it is not ecological, but the true reason is the fact that an overland traveller is far too independent from civilization, and far too capable to move fast and be uncontrolled for the preferences of a police state. In the future we will not be entitled to do what we like to do anymore, but what the regime tells us to do, and what will be profitable, and easy to monitor for them. Soon we shall all say farewell to freedom. And for some of us, that will probably be the end of life. Because, a life without freedom is no life at all.

Why the brand exclusive offroad events have no future?

I honestly don’t believe that brand exclusive offroad events and gatherings are a thing to be crazy about (except for the bosses of the car industry). Marketing departments of various brands do invest quite an effort to organize them, as well as support brand exclusive clubs, which is understandable. They want to position themselves as THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE OFFROAD BRAND, to thrive on a tradition and get to the emotions of people, to tie them closer to the brand and secure future sales. But, from a purely personal, psychological point of view, such bonds are unnatural. By choosing friends with the vehicle they drive as the main criteria, we’re making too much of a compromise. We’re forcing ourselves to tolerate some jerks that we normally wouldn’t be ready to, only because they’ve chosen to drive the same brand of offroad vehicle as we do. And that can be very stressful, and influence your mood in quite a bad way. It’s bad compromise.
